Browser Configuration

To have a successful experience with our web site you have to make sure your browser's configuration meets certain criteria. These requirements are quite average. The default settings of all browsers do meet these criteria, and no change is necessary. However, some users have a tendency to excessively harden their security configuration. Although we encourage taking good security measures, excessive browser hardening does cause functionality reduction. It may result in difficulty logging in, or viewing some of the site's features. The following are some of the browser's features and the recommended configuration.

Cookie

We respect your privacy so we do not use persistent cookies. However, for class registration, we do use session cookies. Session cookies are small, temporary, pieces of information that are set in your computer only during the browsing session. As soon as you close your browser, session cookies will be deleted. They do not leave any residue on your computer. The session cookie is Enabled by default. If it has been Disabled in your browser, the following procedure shows you how to Enable it.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x (Windows):

  1. Use IE's "Tools/Internet Options" menu command to display the "Internet Options" window.
  2. Click on the "Privacy" tab at the top of the window.
  3. We recommend IE's Default Security Setting of "Medium".
  4. If you choose to use IE's "Advanced" settings (not recommended), be sure that "Always allow session cookies" is checked.
  5. If you still have trouble, go back to the "Internet Options" window, click on "Security", and make sure the security level is set to "Medium". You may have to click on the "Default Level" button in order for the Security level slider to appear.
Netscape 7.x:
  1. Use the "Edit/Preferences" menu command to display the "Preferences" window.
  2. Open up the "Privacy & Security" section and click on "Cookies".
  3. We recommend using "Enable cookies based on privacy settings" with a setting of "medium" (under "View").
All other browsers, please consult your documentation.

Pop-up Blocker

There are several parts of this web site that use pop-up windows for legitimate, non-advertising reasons. Improper configuration of the pop-up blocking software will prevent you from using many of the important features of our site. Things that may stop working due to pop-up blockers include: Logging-in, showing other views of an item, showing larger image of a thumbnail, view/print special instructions. Since pop-up blocking software varies widely, we cannot provide specific steps for its configuration. Please consult your documentation.

However, if your computer has Windows-XP with SP2 (Service Pack 2) and you use the built-in pop-up blocker that comes with IE 6.x SP2, you can use this guide to properly configure the pop-up blocking feature of your IE browser.
