Knitting Class List

K156 - The Beads Go On

Knowing just the basics of knitting, you can easily learn to knit with beads. Come join us in this enjoyable class, taught by Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer (Jackie E-S), where we combine beads with knitting to add a fabulous touch.

Our class projects include three styles of fun and practical beaded-garter bands that can be used as wrist warmers, as ankle bracelets (a.k.a. sock-not cuffs), or as huggies for your favorite drink containers. You can look forward to exploring a myriad of color and bead placement combinations. Quick and easy knitting can turn these projects into gifts that friends and family will love, too!

You will learn about

  • Knitting with beads in single, random, and multi-color designs on a garter stitch base
  • Getting the effect you want with different yarn and bead combinations
  • Bead stringing techniques and tips to help you find the method that works best for you
  • How to knit a chained selvedge as a knit-as-you-go finishing edge to garter stitch
  • An easy method for joining the beginning and end of beaded-garter stitch to produce a nearly invisible seam with minimum bulk
  • Reading charted instructions for more complex beading designs
  • How even-count charts from other fiber disciplines such as cross-stitch, needlepoint, and filet crochet can be used in designing your own beaded knitting designs
  • Preventing and correcting mistakes in beaded knitting
  • Finishing, wear and care of items knitted with beads

This class consists of three lessons with a different small project in each lesson. In Lesson 1, we will learn the basics of beaded-garter knitting while knitting with a random color mix of beads against solid color yarn. In Lesson 2, we will work a counted design in a single color or random mix of beads against solid or variegated yarn. In Lesson 3, we extend our skills to working counted designs in a planned sequence of multiple colors of beads.

To take this class, you should be comfortable with these basics of knitting: knit, k2tog, and slip stitch. If you need a refresher beforehand, check out our Knitting library. Please see the Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

Three Lessons. Students with basic and higher level skill may benefit from this class. No previous beaded knitting experience needed.

K106 - Modular Knitted Pillow

When you open knitting magazines these days, you find at least a couple of Mitered Squares designs. Since Horst Schultz introduced them, these squares have taken the knitting industry by storm. They allow knitters to work on multi-color patterns without the need to work with more than one color at a time. This is a plus, but you might think that you have to sew the squares together, which is a pain by itself.

In this class Nazanin S. Fard (Nazee) shows how to make Mitered Squares and knit them in a way that no sewing would be required. In this process you will learn Cable Cast-on. The finished project is a wonderful pillow with applied I-cord around the edge. Using I-cord is not only a practical way to finish your work, it also adds to the beauty of the design. Use any colors that match your décor. Then you can work on any project you find in your favorite magazine.

To take this class, you should be comfortable to work k2tog and ssk. Class has two lessons. In lesson-1, we will work the squares and make the basic pillow. In Lesson-2, we will learn to knit applied I-cord and work it around the pillow. Nazee has made two rows of I-cord to enhance the design. Checkout Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

K172 - Get Twisted!

Cables and other twisted stitches make for some of the most captivating knitting patterns. Though they look intricate, they're surprisingly easy to create. Let JC Briar show you how in this class. You will practice cabling by knitting four sampler squares. With each square, you will learn something new.

  • The first square lets you dabble in basic rope cables. You will see how a cable's crossing rate affects its appearance.

  • The second square introduces the popular Braid and Staghorn cables. You will gain practice in "reading" your knitting.

  • The third square showcases twisted stitches, and cable crossings of unequal numbers of stitches. You will have the chance to try knitting mini-cables without a cable needle.

  • The last square involves traveling stitches and bobbles. You will also work a cable crossing that leaves its center stitch unaltered.
Along the way, you will also learn to read charts. In addition, you will get tips on fixing errors, and compensating for changes in gauge. In the end, you can use your sampler squares to create a small drawstring tote bag, a pillow cover, or a set of hot pads.

This class has two lessons. In Lesson 1, you will learn to work basic cables, read charts, and keep track of your knitting. In Lesson 2, you will try more advanced cables, twisted stitches, and bobbles. Checkout Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

K174 - A Touch of Color

This is your chance to explore in the realm of color! JC Briar walks with you on a trip that will begin with a series of exercises geared to help you really see the colors around you, come up with color combinations that sing, and achieve balance in designs.

And you will learn to apply your new-found color savvy to your knitting. The emphasis? Easy ways of working with color. Your adventure will include textured stitch patterns that make the most of variegated yarns, and slip stitch patterns with "wow!" results. You will gain tips on handling yarn ends, overcoming dye lot differences, and avoiding unsightly "pooling." And you will see just how easy it is to turn swatches into successes, either by modifying an existing garment pattern or by using a generic garment "recipe."

This class has two lessons. In Lesson 1, you will sample various sources of color inspiration, and practice yarn-handling techniques by knitting a fun hat. In Lesson 2, you will see how purl stitches and slip stitches add a lot of "zing!" with minimal effort, and how to combine color and stitch pattern in the creation of your own unique designs. K108 - Mitered Shells Jacket

This beautiful jacket is a show stopper. The lovely shape of each shell and its position relative to the next creates a wonderful flow that compliments most body types. You can make this jacket with V-neckline and ¾ sleeves, in any color combination you like or even use it as a stash buster. Another advantage of this project is that except for the shoulder seam, there are no other seams to sew.

In this class Nazanin S. Fard (Nazee) shows you how to measure your body, and make the jacket your own size. Then she will teach you to knit the shells, join them to make the jacket. The finished project is a wonderful jacket that makes your work the center of attention anywhere you wear it.

This class has three lessons. In Lesson-1, you will learn to measure your body and make the first and second row of shells. In this process you will figure out how many shells you need to make the jacket. In Lesson-2 you will learn to knit half shells for front edges, and make half and quarter top shells for putting the jacket together. In Lesson-3 you will learn to pick up and knit stitches for the front edge and knit the ¾ sleeves in similar pattern as the body.

To take this class, you should be comfortable to work yo, ssk, and k2tog. If you need to learn or refresh your memory on how to do these stitches, our Knitting Library is just one click away. This project is fun and full of information. You will enjoy working on it. Checkout Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

K110 - Toe-Up Socks

The name speaks for itself; these socks are worked from toe to cuff, circularly on 4 Double Pointed needles. Alternatively, you can use 2 Circular needles. The advantage of knitting socks from toe-up is that you can try them on while you knit, so you can assure of an exact fit. The pattern used for these socks is a simple mock cable. When you learn the basics, you can replace it with any other pattern of your choice to make new socks with different patterns.

In this class Nazanin S. Fard (Nazee) will help you understand the basics. To take this class you should be comfortable to work k2tog. If you need to learn or refresh your memory on how to do this stitch, our Knitting Library is just one click away. We will discuss Pick-up and knit during class.

For the Open-end (provisional) Cast-on, in addition to describing it with text and photos, there are also two video clips (audio/video). First you can see and hear in action how it is done, and later the way it is used.

Most of the instructions which are originally written for double pointed needles work the same way on circular needles. However, there are areas that instructions for circular needles are different. Such areas are clearly distinguished and explained. So you actually get two classes for the price of one.

This class has two lessons. In lesson one, we will learn to cast-on invisibly and shape the toe with short rows, then Pick-up and knit the foot. In lesson two, we will work the heel using a pattern that makes the heel sturdy, shape gusset, and finally knit the cuff.

This project is fun and full of information. You will enjoy working on these socks and later wearing them, or giving them as a gift. Checkout Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

K170 - Top-down Sweater with Set-in Sleeves

Many knitters enjoy creating seamless sweaters from the top down; they are easy to adjust for a customized fit, and they require almost no finishing. Raglan sleeves are popular, but set-in sleeves are also possible, and offer a better fit for many people. Add saddles at the shoulders, and you've got a built-in design element.

In this class, you will learn to design your own top-down sweater with set-in sleeves. As JC Briar guides you through the process, you will learn to shape an armhole with increases rather than decreases, to provisionally cast on for a seamless underarm, and to use short rows to shape a sleeve cap. In the end, you will have a perfectly custom-fit sweater.

This class has four lessons. In Lesson 1, you will take a few key measurements, and knit the sweater's saddles. In Lesson 2, you will get some short-row practice as you add shoulder shaping, and then you will knit the front and back down to the underarm. In Lesson 3, you will add a collar — making it easy to try the sweater on and test its fit — and you will start on the body. In Lesson 4, you will use short-rows again to knit the sleeve caps. To take this class, you should be comfortable working in the round, and working paired increases and decreases.

You will be amazed by how easy it is to design your own top-down sweater. After the first, you will definitely want to make more! Checkout Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

K130 - Entrelac Fairy Hat

With this hat your child will be the envy of the crib set. If you always wanted to learn Entrelac, join Diane M. Sack to learn it the easy and fun way. The class project is made using a solid color yarn for the first two rounds of Entrelac blocks, then using fancy yarn for the last three rounds of Entrelac blocks. The result is what you see. You can also make it to look like an upside down flower , just like the ones fairies wear. This can be achieved by using a bright solid color yarn for the first two rounds to form the petals. Then switch to green yarn for the last three rounds to make the leaves.

To take this class you should be comfortable to work ssk, k2tog, p2tog. Basic knowledge of crochet to finish the edge with Single Crochet and Reverse Single Crochet (crab stitch) is also required. If you haven't done Crochet, don't worry. Both stitches are very simple and you can quickly learn them at our Crochet library. Diane will show you other techniques such as pick-up & knit, pick-up & purl, and I-Cord.

This class consists of two lessons. In lesson one, you will work the petals. In lesson two, you will make the leaves, stem, and finish the bottom edge. You will enjoy working on this project and learn the wonderful technique of Entrelac. Don't forget, send us pictures; especially those cute babies wearing the hat! K132 - Knit Infant Jacket

This little jacket will be a hit at any baby shower. It looks so cute, and what is great is that it is very easy to knit, (oh, we will not tell anyone). With either pastel or primary colors it will be a big hit. This little jacket is being sold for up to $50 in baby stores. But Diane M. Sack shows how to make it for one third of that. More importantly, it would be more precious, because you DID IT, not bought it. Make a set of the Knit Infant Jacket and the Fairy Hat (K130) and just listen to all the "ooh & aah" that you will get.

Besides the knit and purl stitches, you should be comfortable to work k2tog, p2tog. Basic knowledge of crochet to finish the edge with Single Crochet and Reverse Single Crochet (crab stitch) is also required. If you haven't done Crochet, don't worry. Both stitches are very simple and you can quickly learn them at our Crochet library. Diane will show you other techniques such as three needle bind-off, and pick-up & knit.

This class consists of two lessons. In lesson one, you will work the very full skirt portion and the fancy bodice. In this process, you will use K2tog, P2tog, and learn the three needle bind-off. In lesson two, you will learn the pick-up & knit technique and complete the jacket. At the end, you will complete the work by one row of single crochet and one row of crab stitch around the edges. You will enjoy working on this project and learn new techniques. Don't forget, send us pictures; especially those cute babies wearing the jacket! Checkout Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

K176 - Southwestern Tote Bag

You've probably seen sweaters with designs composed of blocks of color. Some are geometric, perhaps resembling patchwork quilts or Escher prints. Others are pictorial, representing landscapes, animals, or cartoon characters. These designs are achieved through intarsia, a colorwork approach well-suited to creating blocks of color, both large and small.

In this class, JC Briar will show you that a key aspect of intarsia knitting is twisting yarns together at color changes to prevent holes. She will also show you different ways of managing the yarn to minimize tangles.

The class project is a small tote bag, decorated with Southwestern motifs. While knitting this bag, you will practice casting on and binding off in multiple colors, following color charts, and achieving a smooth tension. You will also learn how to fix mistakes or add detail with duplicate stitch. To give your bag a clean finish, you'll line it with a canvas tote. Finally, looking forward to your next intarsia project, JC will give you tips on charting your own designs.

This class has three lessons. In Lesson 1, you will learn the basics of intarsia knitting, and knit your bag's border. In Lesson 2, you will learn additional ways of managing multiple strands of yarn, and knit your bag's front and back faces. In Lesson 3, you will add finishing touches to your bag with duplicate stitch, and assemble it. Two assembly options are offered: crocheted and knit. Checkout Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

K178 - Reversible Cables

Cables are usually worked in stockinette stitch on a background of reverse stockinette, producing a fabric that looks good on one side only. It’s possible, though, to knit reversible cables that look good on both sides—perfect for scarves, stoles, or afghans; fold-over collars or cuffs; or other items where either side might be on display.

In this class, JC Briar will show you two methods for creating reversible cables. You will practice each by knitting a scarf. Your knitting friends will be amazed to see the same cable pattern on both sides of the first scarf, and even more amazed to see different patterns on the two sides of the second scarf. But you will know it’s not magic—just knits and purls and the help of cable needles.

The class has two lessons. The first gives you some background information on cables in general, discusses one type of reversible cable, and gets you started on your first scarf. It also explains how to cast on in a mix of knit and purl, and how to bind off in pattern. The second discusses a second type of reversible cable, and gets you started on your second scarf. The class ends by demystifying blocking, the essential final step in getting any hand-knit item to look its best. Checkout Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

Two Lessons. Students with Basic and higher skill level may benefit from this class. Prior experience working cables may be helpful but is not necessary.

K150 - Technique Teddy Bear

Let Teddy and Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer (Jackie E-S) teach you knitting techniques used in shaping 3-dimensional forms. You will knit a small adorable teddy bear, while learning and practicing:

  • Double Knitting (makes a tube, or two-sided fabric, on straight needles for the legs, body, and arms)
  • Your choice of Kitchener Stitch or Bind Off (for joining along top of arms and shoulders)
  • Circular Short Rows (for shaping the face)

We will also cover ideas for personalizing your Teddy, including simple variations in poses, stuffing ideas, facial expressions, and wardrobe. Finished overall height of your Teddy is 8" - 12" (20 - 30 cm), and will make an enjoyable new companion for a special child or even yourself.

To take this class, you should be comfortable with these basics of knitting: cast on, bind off, k, p, ssk, k2tog and slip stitch. You should also have some experience using double point needles. If you need a refresher beforehand, check out our Knitting library.

This class consists of an introduction and three lessons. In the Introduction, you will choose any worsted weight or bulky yarn you would like to use to make your teddy bear, then swatch for needle size to make an appropriately dense yet pliable fabric. In Lesson-1, you will work Double Knitting for legs, body and arms. In Lesson-2, you will join for top of arms and shoulders, do the initial stuffing, then work the head circularly using short rows for shaping the face. In Lesson-3, you will complete the head and stuff, make the ears, and personalize Teddy with your own creative touches. This is a class that both relatively new knitters and the more advanced will enjoy — and who can resist a lovable teddy bear! Checkout Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

K154 - Triangular Lace Shawl

Knitting lace is easier than you might think — even the simplest lace patterns look impressive and invite awe. In this class taught by Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer (Jackie E-S), we will knit a beautiful lace shawl while learning and practicing:

  • Top-down triangular lace shawl construction
  • Reading a lace chart
  • Tips and tricks for making our lace knitting a satisfying experience
  • Binding off in a lace edging
  • Blocking and care of your lace shawl

The triangle shawl design we will use in our class project is adaptable to any yarn type and can be knitted to any length. Not only will you take away new skills and tips for knitting lace, you will also create a lovely shawl made to your own personal taste in yarn and to your desired size.

This class consists of three lessons. In Lesson-1 we will start our shawls at the center back neckline, thereby allowing us to practice lace knitting on just a few stitches and learn to read a lace chart. In Lesson-2, we will focus on tips and tricks for making our lace knitting a satisfying experience. As the shawls widen, the number of stitches increases, so this will be a good time to discuss things to do to help avoid mistakes in the first place, and then cover what to do to get back on track if they do. In Lesson-3, we will learn to bind off in a lace edging, and how to block lace to release its stunning beauty.

To take this class, you should be comfortable with these basics of knitting: cast on, knit, purl, yarn over, increasing (make a stitch), decreasing (ssk, k2tog) and slip stitch. K142 - Fair Isle Gloves

Here is your chance to knit a pair of gloves with the technique from that tiny Island, 3 miles (5km) long and 2 miles (3km) wide, of Fair Isle. Maybe you will be able to "trade" your Fair Isle gloves with passing ships as the women of this tiny Island did hundreds of years ago! When others see your finished gloves they will want you to knit them a pair.

These Fair Isle Gloves have three different patterns worked in traditional Fair Isle fashion, only two colors per row. In this class Diane M. Sack will show you how to knit with both hands (one color in each hand). Using this technique will cut down the amount of twisted messy yarns. You will also learn to carry the yarn along the back without any floats, read a chart for the pattern, and knit a picot hem that adds to the beauty of the gloves.

There is no need to use any bobbins for this pattern and you will practice knitting with double point needles. If you need help with knitting in round on double pointed needles check out our Knitting library. There are a lot of helpful hints through out this class that you can apply to other knitting projects too.

This class has two lessons. In lesson-1 you will learn to knit the picot hem and the body of the glove with each color in one hand. In lesson-2 you will learn to work the fingers and thumb without having any holes. Checkout Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

Let's admit it, babies are irresistible, and so is knitting for them. No matter how many items you have made or bought for a new baby in your life, you cannot resist making a new one. Every parent will appreciate a gift of love, something that you have made with your own hands.

In this class Nazanin S. Fard (Nazee) will show you to knit a baby jacket along with a bonnet and a pair of booties. Not only you can make an elegant baby layette, you can also practice your skills in lace knitting and making raglan sleeves.

To take the class you should be comfortable to work (yo, k2tog, ssk or skp). If you need to learn or refresh your memory on how to do these stitches, our Knitting Library is just one click away.

This class consists of three lessons. In lesson one, we will work on the bonnet and practice the lace pattern. In lesson two, we will work on the jacket, which has the lace pattern up to the armholes and then has a simple raglan sleeve. In lesson three we will discuss the booties and will have instructions to make them on two needles.

This project is fun and full of information. You will enjoy working on it and a little baby will enjoy wearing it. Don't forget we love to have pictures, especially cute ones. Checkout Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

K104 - Beaded Amulet Purse & Necklace

Beading and working with beads is very popular these days. You can find beads on almost everything; sweaters, jackets, scarves, and accessories. Department Stores charge a fortune for a small beaded item. In this class Nazanin S. Fard (Nazee) shows you how to knit with beads and create a small beautiful Amulet Purse and a gorgeous Necklace.

For beaded Garter Stitch and I-Cord (regular & beaded), in addition to describing them with text and photos, there are also three video clips (audio/video) so you can see and hear how they are done in action.

This class has three lessons. In lesson one, we will learn how to knit with beads on Garter Stitch and make the body of the purse. In lesson two, to finish the purse, we will work on three different types of handles. One Crochet, one I-Cord, and one twisted cord, so you can choose the one you like best. In lesson three, we will learn how to use Slip Stitch technique to work beads on an I-Cord necklace (Appeared in Fire Mountain Gems advertisement in Crochet Magazine, March 2006).

To take this class, you should be comfortable knitting with thread and able to use small needles. Working on this set of amulet purse & necklace is very satisfying and you will enjoy making them. You can use your newly acquired skills to make other same style projects. Checkout Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

K112 - Cellular Lace Socks

These socks are worked from cuff to toe on two circular needles. For many, knitting with two circular needles is easier than four double points. Usually the project goes faster. If you have not knit socks with circular needles, this is your chance. The pattern used for these socks is a beautiful, yet simple lace which is easy to remember.

In this class Nazanin S. Fard (Nazee) will help you understand the basics. To take this class you should be comfortable to work k2tog. If you need to learn or refresh your memory on how to do this stitch, our Knitting Library is just one click away. We will discuss Pick-up and knit, Kitchener stitch and Invisible Cast-on during the class.

For the Invisible Cast-on, in addition to describing it with text and photos, there is also a video clip (audio/video) so you can see and hear how it is done in action.

This class has two lessons. In lesson one, we will learn to cast-on invisibly and knit the cuff, and shape the heel. In lesson two, we will discuss pick-up and knit, shape gusset, knit the foot and finally knit the toe and finish work with Kitchener stitch.

This project is fun and full of information. You will enjoy working on these socks and later wearing them, or giving them as a gift. Checkout Tools & Supplies needed for this class.

K114 - Knitting in Strips Vest

Have you ever seen a beautiful garment that you fall in love with, but give up because it has so many different patterns that it would be very difficult to follow them all at the same time? There is an easy solution, knit each pattern in a strip, then join them (without sewing) to create a lovely garment.

In this class Nazanin S. Fard (Nazee) will show you how to knit a garment in strips and make it your own size. What is better than a custom fit garment? You will be amazed how easy it is to design your own garment in strips.

The class project is an open front, V-neck vest with 3 different lace patterns. The instructions for the lace patterns will be given both in charts and written format, so you can follow whichever you like. The flexibility of the design allows you to replace any of these 3 patterns with the pattern of your choice from a stitch dictionary.

This class consists of three lessons. In lesson one, Nazee will show you how to take your own measurements, or anybody else for that matter, and make the design fit. We then move on to work on the back panel. In lesson two, we will work on the side panels. In lesson three we will work on the front pieces, and finally join all pieces together to form the vest.

To take this class you should be comfortable to work (yo, ssk, k2tog). If you need to learn or refresh your memory on how to do these stitches, our Knitting Library is just one click away.
